Cultural continuum
The Brisbane Water Learning Community work together to deliver the Aboriginal Cultural Continuum K-12.
The Brisbane Water Learning Community Aboriginal Cultural Continuum was designed by staff from Brisbane Water Learning Community; Umina and Woy Woy Campuses, Umina Beach Public School, Ettalong Public School, Empire Bay Public School, Woy Woy Public School and Woy Woy South Public School.
The continuum offers a framework for these schools to offer studies in Aboriginal history and culture. It provides experiences for our students to learn about their culture by visiting local historical sites, tasting bush tucker and participating in dance, art and traditional games.
School parliament
The school parliament acts as a platform for the students to have their say in what happens around the school. It allows students to learn about the democracy and how the political process works within our nation. Students are taught that they have a voice and provides them with the tools to enact change.
In 2015 we had the first official opening of parliament. We had a number of guests attend the event including Senator Deborah O'Neil, member for Robertson Lucy Wicks and Karen Jones the Director of Education in New South Wales. During the opening a motion was proposed that the school should support white ribbon day. Senator O'Neil agreed with this motion and donated ribbons and pins for all students at Umina Beach Public School.
Year 6 have enjoyed taking on the roles and responsibilities within the school parliament. They have proposed many motions and made changes within the school. We look forward to continuing parliament next year.
